About the Bill
The Upper Texas Coast is one of America's most significant working coastal landscapes, a place where world-class recreation, thriving coastal communities, nationally significant wildlife habitat, rich cultural heritage and working industrial waterfronts come together. The proposed Lone Star Coastal National Recreation Area is a locally-led partnership that would connect these extraordinary places into a nationally recognized destination, expanding outdoor recreation, strengthening coastal resilience and conservation, supporting local economies, and enhancing quality of life, all while keeping local leadership, private property rights, and voluntary participation at the center.
Rather than creating a traditional national park, this uniquely Texas model partners with the National Park Service to build on the region's existing strengths and assets and elevate the Upper Texas Coast as a premier destination for recreation, heritage tourism, and conservation. It's about connecting and bringing attention to what already makes the Upper Texas Coast one of America's most significant coastal regions, and ensuring it continues to benefit the people, communities, and landscapes that will define it for generations to come.
